Tzeva Adom. Red Alert. [7-15 seconds later…] BOOOOM!!!
Once to twice a day, the residents of Sderot hear this siren and must run into bomb shelters to escape missiles coming from Gaza. The Sderot community suffers constantly, yet the residents do not give up their city to Arabs because they know that if they do, then the Arabs would be within shooting distance of cities like Ashdod, Ashkelon, and Tel Aviv. The people see destruction daily, yet they harbor great strength.
During Sukkot, two MMY Students (Tamara Freiden and Talya Kobrin) visited Sderot and were impressed by the gravity of the situation. They realized that they had to do something for Sderot, and in the following weeks, "S.H.OUT Sderot" (for Seminaries Help OUT Sderot), was born.
Talya and Tamara with Sderot Children
Tamara and Talya, with the help of MMY Student Activities Coordinator Sara Markowitz, planned and coordinated S.H.OUT Sderot,a huge concert-fundraiser in Yerushalayim featuring Shlomo Katz, on Monday, December 24th.
The main purpose of the evening was to give emotional and financial support to the people of Sderot. Hundreds of seminary students and about 75 high school girls from Sderot attended, and the food was also brought in from Sderot. Girls from different seminaries ran booths, danced together to Shlomo Katz music, and spent time with Sderot girls.
Run in cooperation with the One Family Fund, the event was a huge success, raising over $10,000 for various projects in Sderot. Some of the proceeds will go toward expanding the community center of Kehillat Doresh Tov, while the rest is being used for various causes including youth and community activities, helping Sderot’s victims of terror and individuals who are unemployed due to the situation, as well as for public relations and awareness.
