Rabbi Howard Apfel - Combining Torah and Medicine

Rabbi Apfel joined the MMY family two years ago. Originally from Teaneck, where he was a practicing pediatric cardiologist, he made aliyah with his wife and 7 children to Ramat Beit Shemesh four years ago.

Rabbi Apfel’s first chinuch experience in Eretz Yisrael was actually 10 years ago, when at the suggestion of Rav Shimon Isaacson, he took a year leave of absence from his job at Columbia University Medical Center to teach at Yeshivat Mevaseret.  After returning to the US, Rabbi Apfel taught in YUHSB and YU for the next few years, while simultaneously practicing cardiology.

Although content in America, Rabbi Apfel and his wife knew that ultimately their hearts remained in Israel. Four years ago they made the move to Ramat Beit Shemesh and have been extremely happy in their new home. Rabbi Apfel feels among the many factors drawing one to make Aliyah, is the passion of the people for Torah ideals and avodas Hashem irrespective of their particular hashkafic leanings.

Today, Rabbi Apfel is a full time Rebbe in Yeshivat Torat Shraga in addition to teaching in MMY, and Michala. He teaches Bio ethics, Contemporary Hashkafic challenges and Modern Halachic controversies in MMY, often bringing fascinating real life experiences into the lessons. Rabbi Apfel continues to work as a cardiologist and to see patients both here in Israel as well as on periodic trips to America where he still continues to have his practice.

Aside from teaching and seeing patients, Rabbi Apfel’s greatest joy is the opportunity to spend quality time with his children and grandchildren both in Israel and the US. He looks forward to many more wonderful years at MMY.
