First South African Students Join MMY

South Africans

Tevet 5772 was a milestone month here at MMY, as we welcomed our first South African student, Shira Amar from Johannesburg!

Coming from the Southern Hemisphere, Shira joined us in January, enjoyed a semester with the 5772 talmidot, and has now continued for the second half of her year with the girls who came for 5773.

At the beginning of this year in Elul, Shira was joined by two other South Africans, Esti Hoppenstein and Sarit Saffer.  In addition, Rabbi Haber visited Jo'burg this past summer, and as a result, two more students are set to join MMY in January. We are proud to be one of the few Midrashot in Israel that cater to students from South Africa. They join our existing groups from the US, Canada, England, Australia and Israel - making MMY into a truly "international" seminary!

This exciting development came about in part due to the initiative and insight of our staff member Mrs. Shalvie Friedman, a previous madricha, educator and pioneer in Jewish education in Jo'burg.  During her time teaching there, Mrs. Friedman worked to enrich and develop opportunities for Jewish learning in her home country. MMY is fortunate to benefit from the fruits of her efforts, which have prepared the young women from Jo'burg with the skills and the drive that they will need to benefit from the learning in MMY.

When asked to describe her experience, Shira said, "it was a privilege to be the first South African in MMY, and I can't wait for others to have this unique opportunity as well!"
